Lemon Crinkles Recipe

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup white sugar, or as needed
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Mix brown sugar, shortening, egg, and lemon zest together in a bowl until creamy. Stir in flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, ginger, and salt until dough comes together.
  3. Pour white sugar onto a plate. Roll dough into 1-inch balls; dip 1 side in white sugar. Arrange balls, sugared-side up, on 2 baking sheets.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until edges are pale golden and tops look dry, 10 to 12 minutes.
