Black-Eyed Peas with Ham Hocks and Greens Recipe

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 smoked ham hocks
  • 1 (20 ounce) package frozen black-eyed peas
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot chili flakes, or to taste
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cups coarsely chopped collard greens
  • 1 tablespoon Safeway SELECT Red Wine Vinegar
  • Salt
  1. In a 4- to 5-quart pan, combine water, ham hocks, peas, onion, pepper, chili flakes, garlic, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, covered, until peas are tender, about 45 minutes.
  2. Remove bay leaf and ham hocks. Cut any meat from hocks; return meat to pan.
  3. Stir in collard greens. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer, covered, until greens are tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in vinegar and salt to taste.
